In its process of continuous innovation, g-pad is the natural result of Spongel – Magic’s patented compostable super absorbent powder – and Aerogel g-grade – a compostable airlaid – both OK Compost certified.
G-pad combines g-grade airgel with a compostable film through a heat bonding process: no glue, no chemical additives, no adhesives are used, while the absorption capacity is the same as that of traditional plastic film pads.
G-pad was inspired and designed according to the principles of the circular economy, so that the new end-of-life food pad can be disposed of with household organic waste for industrial composting.
It simplifies the consumer experience by promoting proper recycling. When packaging has to be cleaned because of food residues, it often involves difficult separation steps: using compostable packaging can simplify all this and give a boost to recycling more willingly, correctly and easily.
A study carried out by Doxa in 2021 for Aticelca (Associazione Tecnica Italiana Cellulosa e Carta) shows that consumers are increasingly attentive to separating the different components of complex packaging, if they are put in a situation to do so. In a sample of 1000 Italians between the ages of 18 and 85, it turns out that when you throw away packaging made of different materials, 95% are ready to separate and only 5% are not. Of those who do separate, 59% always separate components of different materials and 6% only separate components if they need to be removed upon opening.
Consumers are therefore ready to play their part, but they expect packaging that is easy to dismantle.
The challenge that food packaging manufacturers are already facing is to increase the development of packaging that respects the environment, from renewable sources or of biodegradable and compostable origin and to generalize the use of so-called “green” packaging. “whose components are increasingly easy to separate so that each material is sent to its recycling chain.
Advantages of the G-pad:
- create a simplified experience for consumers;
- can be disposed of with household organic waste;
- can be recovered by industrial composting;
- extend product shelf life and help reduce food waste;
- contribute to the production of quality compost;
- can be an alternative solution to non-recyclable packaging;
- reduce plastic contamination in separate collection.
