French lipstick exports rise with rising demand from China

French lipstick suppliers are benefiting from the recovery of the global cosmetics market. From January to October 2021, exports of lip makeup preparations amounted to 5,900 tons, which is 11% more than the same period of the previous year. in monetary terms, supplies from abroad jumped 31% to $728 million. China, the largest importer of lipsticks from France, increased its purchases by 53% to 1,300 tons or 76% to $267 million in value during the reporting period. in January-October 2021, the average price of lip makeup preparations in France was $124 per kg, an increase of 18% compared to the figures for the same period in 2020.

French exports of lip make-up preparations in 2021

From January to October 2021, France exported 5.9,000 tons of lip makeup preparations worth $728 million. Compared to the same period of the previous year, exports increased by 11% in physical terms and 31% in terms of value. The average price of lip makeup preparations from France was estimated at $124 per kg, up 18% from figures for the same period in 2020.

Sales growth was driven mainly by growing demand from China, which increased purchases by 53% to 1.3ktonne or 76% to $267m in value. Among other importers, the United States, Singapore, Italy and Spain increased their imports from France, while Germany, the United Kingdom and Russia reduced their purchases.

The increase in supplies from France reflects a recovery in the global cosmetics market as France remains one of the largest cosmetics suppliers in the world. It is also the leading exporter of lipsticks with a 16% share of the total value.

French exports of lip make-up preparations in 2020

In 2020, approx. 6.6K tonnes of lip make-up preparations were exported from France, down -18.2% from 2019 figures. In terms of value, supplies fell dramatically from 816 million of $659 million (IndexBox estimates).

China (995 tons), the United Kingdom (980 tons) and the United States (637 tons) were the main destinations for lip makeup preparations exported from France, with a combined share of 39% of the total volume. Germany, Singapore, Spain, Italy, Russia, Belgium, South Korea, Japan, United Arab Emirates and Senegal are slightly behind, together accounting for an additional 43%.

In value, China ($180 million) remains the main buyer of French lip make-up preparations, representing 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Singapore (86 million dollars), with a share of 13% of the total value. It was followed by the United States, with an 8.4% share.

The average export price of lip makeup preparations was $99,600 per ton in 2020, roughly mirroring the previous year. Prices varied significantly depending on the country of destination; the country with the highest price was South Korea ($313,708 per ton), while the average export price to Senegal ($3,564 per ton) was among the lowest.

In 2020, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was recorded for deliveries to South Korea, while prices for other major destinations experienced more modest growth rates.
