F1 partners with Digital Catapult to explore 5G opportunities

Formula 1 is working with tech company Digital Catapult and a cohort of small and medium-sized businesses to jointly explore 5G solutions to the challenges of the events industry, as part of 5PRING, the UK’s leading 5G business application accelerator .

Formula 1 is looking for solutions to improve event experiences for racing fans, making the viewing experience more inclusive and interactive for audiences live and at home, through the use of 5G and innovative technologies.

In collaboration with Digital Catapult, Formula 1 will test the latest emerging technologies and quantify value through Digital Catapult’s 5G lab and demonstrators; explore new fan engagement opportunities alongside startups and scale-ups; and build on its already strong culture of innovation by exploiting these startups and scale-ups

The 5PRING Live Events program, launched this month, brings together startups, scaleups and industry experts to develop innovations in the event industry using 5G.

The program’s startups and scaleups will have access to cutting-edge technology and private 5G networks; a tailor-made acceleration program; as well as the coaching, mentoring and expertise provided throughout the program by experts from Virgin Media O2, Deloitte, Wayra, West Midlands 5G and Digital Catapult.

5PRING is one of many programs involving Digital Catapult that explore the potential of 5G to revolutionize live events. Others include 5G VISTA, which aims to provide a more interactive and wider range of content for sports fans. The 5G Festival creates a “Festival of the Future” where artists and audiences can come together and connect both in person and online via 5G. And 5G Testbed Accelerator is a program in which startups have used 5G to improve their products and services. Sceenic has developed Watch Together, a cross-platform solution that brings content and conversation together in one place, so people can simultaneously enjoy and interact with the same content in different places – from families to fans.

“Formula 1 is delighted to be working with 5PRING to explore new and exciting ways to provide fans with great experiences using 5G,” said Pete Samara, Director of Formula 1 Strategic Technical Enterprises. “F1 is delighted to explore with startups and scale-ups focused on this area, knowing that 5G is a technology that will transform and have a huge impact on event experiences globally.
