[email protected] obtains national RJ recognition from a publishing magazine

The Review-Journal has received national recognition for “[email protected]”, its fast-paced weekday newsletter.

Earlier this month, Editor & Publisher magazine named the paper one of its “10 News Publishers That Do It Right” for the twice-daily seven-minute newscasts launching in January 2021.

The magazine noted the challenges of launching a new initiative amid the COVID-19 pandemic when the majority of RJ staff were working from home. E&P praised the Review-Journal for its work in satisfying readers’ appetite for a fast-paced local newscast that competes with television stations.

“Remembering that streaming video content was in addition to their regular large-scale news operation, the initiative was a win for all aspects of their business,” the magazine wrote of the Review-Journal. .

“It’s the first local newscast designed primarily to be viewed on a smart phone. Staff in all departments frequently receive compliments from readers, subscribers and customers on how much they appreciate the show’s pace and brevity,” said Jim Prather, Review-Journal’s Executive Director of Programming. “It was validated for us.”

The Review-Journal has already received several first-place awards for “[email protected]” at the Nevada Press Foundation’s Annual Achievement Awards Dinner in September. Among the awards were Best Video Program or Series and Best Advertising Innovation to Chase Rankin, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Rankin told E&P that the Review-Journal averaged 850,000 video views per month with “[email protected],” and the newspaper tripled its video revenue. Newscasts air at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each weekday and are available on most on-demand platforms, from YouTube and Fire TV to Roku and Alexa and the News website and app. Review-Journal.

Editor Glenn Cook said “[email protected]” gives Review-Journal reporters and visual journalists “a platform to develop their own brands” and present their stories to new audiences.

“We have the largest newsroom in the state and the most reporters in the region,” Cook said. “’[email protected]′ features all the stories readers would already see on our website and in our newspaper. But it gives them the most important information on a range of topics in just seven minutes.

Other publications recognized by E&P include Pioneer Publishing in Omaha, Nebraska; the Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in Atlanta; and The Tennessean in Nashville, Tennessee.
